Center for Academic Success

Student success is the focus in the Center for Academic Success (CAS). The CAS is the primary home for the Pathways to Success Program, peer tutoring, the Academic English Program, Accelerate U!, and developmental course offerings. In the CAS, you will find professional advisors, dedicated instructors, and outstanding Murray State students eager to help you become a successful college student. We offer a variety of academic services for anyone enrolled at Murray State and invite you to use our services.

Courses

The Center for Academic Success at Murray State offers a variety of courses in the following areas:

College Study Skills

REA 096, Fundamental Reading Skills, is a one-hour, load credit, computer-assisted course designed to prepare students for college level reading through comprehension practice and vocabulary strategies. The course is required for students with reading ACT scores of 19 and below. It is recommended for those who have been out of school for several years or who feel insecure about their reading comprehension skills.

ESS 120 (REA 120), College Study Skills, is a one-hour, elective-credit course required for students with reading ACT scores of 19 and below. It is available to all Murray State students, but recommended for those who have been out of school for several years, or who are uncertain that their study skills are adequate for college-level courses.

ESS 121 (REA 121), Advanced College Study Skills, a one-hour, elective-credit course designed to further strengthen reading and study skills. To provide individualized course specific instruction, ESS 121 should be taken in conjunction with a freshman level University Studies requirement.

English

ENG 096, Basic Writing, is a three-hour, load credit, computer-assisted course required for those whose English ACT score is 17 and below. It is recommended for those who have been out of school for several years or who feel insecure about their writing skills.

ENG 111, Fundamental Writing Skills, is a one-hour, elective credit course designed to further strengthen writing skills. ENG 111 must be taken concurrent with ENG 105.

Eng 112, Fundamental Writing Skills II, is a one-hour elective credit course designed to further strengthen reading skills. ENG 112 must be taken concurrent with ENG 105.

Math

MAT 095, Fundamental Mathematics Skills, is a two-hour, load credit course to refresh math and geometry skills. This developmental course is required for students with math ACT score of 15 and below.

MAT 096, Introductory Algebra, is a three-hour, load-credit course required for those whose Math ACT scores are 16 to 18. It is recommended for those who have been out of school for several years, or who feel insecure about their beginning algebra skills.

Pathways to Success

ESS 130, College Success Strategies, is a three-hour, load credit course which explores strategies for academic success and personal management leading to improved academic performance. The course focuses on areas in which students need assistance, awareness, and extra support. Topics discussed include college transitions; characteristics of success college students; strategic learning and major and career exploration. This is a first-year experience course that is required of all students admitted into the Pathways to Success (P2S) program.

Public Speaking Course

COM 161, Introduction to Public Speaking, Organization and presentation of ideas through participation in frequent speech activities. Students present speeches to inform, solve problems, and persuade. Communication needs of the individual students are considered and guidance is given by the instructor. 3 hours.

Success Planning

Planning for and being successful takes hard work and dedication. It requires focus and strong-will. Psychologist and researcher, Angela Lee Duckworth, reminds us that it also takes grit. “Grit is sticking with your future — day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years — and working really hard to make that future a reality.” You can see her TED video on the “The Key to Success? Tutoring

Free peer tutoring is offered without appointment for many University Studies classes. Located on the first floor of Lowry Center, tutors are available Monday through Thursday afternoons during fall and spring semesters.

Placement Testing

Murray State University and the Council on Post-Secondary Education recognize that an ACT score below benchmark may not always reflect a student’s ability. Therefore, free placement testing is available to provide an alternate test score for possible placement out of developmental courses. Tests in English, math, and reading are offered during Freshman Orientation sessions.

Beginning Fall 2017, all Pathways to Success students will be placed into their mathematics class based on their ALEKS PPL test score.  Pathways to Success students will also be placed into their English and Reading classes based on their Writing and Reading KYOTE scores.
